Seeds for Transformed Living

You're alive. Do something. The directive in life, the moral imperative is so uncomplicated. It could be expressed in single words, not complete sentences. It sounded like this: Look. Listen. Choose. Act.
Barbara Hal, A Summons to New Orleans, 2000

Learn to get in touch with the silence within yourself and know that everything in this life has a purpose.
Elisabeth Kubler-Ross

Isolation is the killer of dreams, not your attitude. Human beings need support and structure.
Barbara Sher, 1-17-2004

Eliminate something superfluous from your life. Break a habit. Do something that makes you feel insecure.
Piero Ferrucci

Most folks are about as happy as they make up their minds to be.
Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865)

It's also helpful to realize that this very body that we have, that's sitting here right now, with its aches and its pleasures, is exactly what we need to be fully human, fully awake, fully alive.
Pema Chodron

Simple Pleasures

"Sunday Morning"

alternative text

How many of you are fans of Sunday Morning? The network TV news show, I mean! I've been a fan since its inception in 1979.

If you want hard-hitting journalism, or even the 6 o'clock news, then Sunday Morning is not for you. Sunday Morning is a simple pleasure that features uplifting and often enlightening segments about politics, the arts, our environment, movie reviews, and the well and lesser known people who are shaping our world. So, if you want to relax with a cup of coffee or tea, and get a different taste of what's happening in the world, then tune into Sunday Morning (in Houston, Channel 11, 8- 9:30AM). The last part is always a 60-second nature segment, and I often stand in front of my TV for a minute at that point to ground and just experience the moment. For more, go to CBSnews.com and click on "All Broadcasts" and then click on "Sunday Morning".

If you have Simple Pleasures you'd like to share, please email them to me.

Greetings!

So how are you doing on those New Year's resolutions? Are you to the point of beating yourself up yet?

Why not become a CREATOR and never make another New Year's Resolution again?

Every year millions of people make those infamous "New Year's Resolutions" for the nth time. But very few know how to use the power of creativity to manifest what they want. Using the Creation Process, you can give definition to those resolutions, and empower yourself to act toward what you want.

Creating is different from the reacting or responding to circumstances that often motivates your resolutions. The process of creating is not generated by the circumstances in which you find yourself, but from the places in you where true desire dwells.

As you begin to consider what you want to create in your life, it is helpful to understand that the circumstance that you currently experience are not the determining factor of the results you desire to create. You are not limited by life circumstances, although you may be entrenched in them, and will need support to move out of them.

Learn more about the Creation Process.

Touching The Void
I read a short article in the Men's Journal (Feb 04) by Joe Simpson, the mountain climber who in 1985 was left for dead after falling into a deep crevasse and breaking a leg. Instead of dying, Joe Simpson crawled seven miles back to base camp over a 4-day period. His survival story is told in the documentary, Touching the Void.

In the Men's Journal article, Joe shares some hard- earned wisdom about life in those times of dealing with life and death crisis. I think that much of it is also true for how to approach major life decisions in general.

Joe says:

Don't panic. The most important thing to do, even when everything is looking really tough, is to keep your head. Joe describes the moment when he realized his leg was broken, and decided that this fact was not a "death sentence".

Use What You've Got. Joe advises: "Don't just sit there. Think. What can I do? What have I got?" Joe and his partner had two 150-foot ropes, powder snow that they could dig into, and braking devices.

Make the tough decision. After falling, Joe decided to go deeper into the crevasse. He recalls, in the article, that "it was the scariest decision that [he'd] ever made," but that he couldn't have done it without the rational part of himself.

Set goals. Joe relates how he never thought he could make it back to base camp, but he believed that in 20 minutes he could make it to a certain point a few yards ahead. So, Joe Simpson set manageable goals for the 4-days it took him to reach base camp. He describes the joy he felt in reaching his goals, and the tears that came when he didn't.

Get Pissed. Joe describes his anger as a motivator. In fact, "it was the anger, really that kept [him] going." For example, when he was close to base camp, he felt that he could no longer move and started to fall into sleep. However, he twisted his broken leg, and it hurt so badly that he got very angry, and the desire to sleep went away.

Re-ignite the Dream

Check out the King Center, a non-profit organization in Atlanta, GA, founded by Ms. Coretta Scott King. The King Center's mission is to further the legacy and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., including his vision to create the Beloved Community--to have all people, everywhere, serve the nation by serving their communities.

Dr. King often challenged us with the question: "What are you doing for others?" To encourage people to serve their communities by serving one another, The King Center assists in matching people with projects through its web site. Log onto The King Center or call 1-866-4-A- Dream. Enter your zip code and select a project in your area of interest (for example, assisting in a hospital or shelter, feeding the hungry, tutoring a child, or repairing homes). You will receive information about local organizations that fit your interests.
