Ten More Commandments

1. Thou shall not worry, for worry is the most unproductive of all human activities.
2. Thou shall not be fearful, for most of the things we fear never come to pass.
3. Thou shall not cross bridges before you get to them, for no one yet has succeeded in accomplishing this.
4. Thou shall face each problem as it comes. You can handle only one at a time anyway.
5. Thou shall not take problems to bed with you for they make very poor bedfellows.
6. Thou shall not borrow other people's problems for they can take better care of them than you can.
7. Thou shall not try to relive yesterday for good or ill-- it is gone. Concentrate on what is happening in your life today.
8. Thou shall count your blessings, never overlooking the small ones, for a lot of small blessings add up to big ones.
9. Thou shall be a good listener, for only when you listen do you hear ideas different from your own. It's very hard to learn something new when you're talking.
10. Thou shall not become bogged down by frustration, for 90 percent of it is rooted in self-pity, and it will only interfere with positive action.

Simple Pleasures

Connect with Nature

When I am tired, overwhelmed and confused, or have just gotten too far into fast-forward and need to slow down, I head for the great outdoors. I immerse myself for a few hours in the simple beauty, the power, and the mystery that can be found in even a nearby patch of woods or on a stretch of beach in Galveston. I let go for a while and receive nurture and inspiration from nature.

Touching nature inspires awe and hope in us. Nature feeds our creative spirits by surrounding us with its power and its mysteries. If we are in contact with it long enough and often enough, it calms us, slowing us to its speed. And it has the power to wash away worries, fears, and self-doubts as it offers us new perspectives on life.

Here are four of my favorite nature spaces that are within easy reach:

Stephen F Austin State Park
(I-10 West)
Brazos Bend State Park
(59 South)
Arboretum at Memorial Park
(610 at Woodway)
Bellaire Nature Center
(New Castle St - between Bellaire and North Braeswood)

Reminding Yourself to Nurture

To remind you how vital it is to nuture yourself, find a small token to remind you to take care of yourself. The token can be a smooth rock, a lock of your child's or beloved's hair, a little note to yourself, or a faceted glass prism. Carry your token with you, tape it your bathroom mirror, or hang it from your rearview mirror as your special reminder. It also helps to change your token from time to time, so that it does not become stale from familiarity.

Visioning
"The best place to begin the creative process is at the end."-Robert Fritz

In the process of visioning, we begin with the opposite of what you've probably learned. We start with the final result you want independent of how you will create it.

The Result is What You Want. Most people have not learned to think about what they really want. Instead, we think about solutions to problems or ask ourselves process questions. Asking yourself the question, "what do I really want?," allows you to accurately describe the truth to yourself, and you can become focused much more quickly.

Sometimes we mistake a step for a result. Unlike a step, a result will stand on its own. If you find that you come up with a step rather than result, then simply ask yourself. " - - and where will this step lead?" until you get to an idea that seems to stand on its own.

Start with A Clean Sheet. Begin without perceived ideas. When you are conceiving a result that you want, start with a blank screen. Try to allow your ideas (remember, these are results you want to manifest) to form without dwelling on what you have thought or done before, or what others have done.

Learn to Use Your Imagination. Picture in your mind's eye the results you would like. This may take some practice, but the benefits are great. Look at your results from many angles in your imagination. Add and subtract elements. Look at your image from the inside out and the outside in, from a distance and upclose. Get really familiar with your vision. As you visualize in this way, you will receive an enormous amount of data about the results you desire.

Think Independently. Allow your visioning to be independent of possibility or of process at this point. In order to create, you have to separate what you want from what you think is possible. This helps you to avoid limiting yourself. Of course, you will need to think of possibility and process at some point, but this comes once you are clear about the result you really want.

The Power of Coaching

Almost everyone has heard of coaching. So, why coaching? Why now?

1. Because we live in a time of unprecedented change and development.
2. Most of us have many options and choices to make in a lifetime.
3. We live longer and many of us have more than one career in our lifetime.
4. We are the first generation to be so focused on personal growth and self-development.
5. We seek to be effective in all that we do, and we seek balance in our lives.
6. And many of us seek to have what we do be an expression of who we are, an expression of our vision and our values.

And, coaching is uniquely developed to support us with such personal and professional transition, growth and transformation.

What Does Coaching Do for You?

1. Helps you to focus and take planned action

As a person of ideas, you want to see your ideas take root and grow. But you either take action or you don't take action. Have you ever taken action that you later wished you hadn't? Or have you ever waited too long to take an action?

Working with a coach is having an "objective" person to bounce ideas off of, to role- play, and help you release your barriers to acting. Working with a coach will help you put your energy where it will serve you best to accomplish your goals.

2. Keeps You Accountable

Knowing that you've made a commitment to yourself and that your coach stands as witness to your commitment makes you more likely to stay on task. Its more difficult to allow yourself to slide when you make an agreement with your coach to do something you need and want to do AND you know that your coach is supporting you.

3. Be More Effective

Goal-oriented people are always looking for ways to be more effective. A coach helps you eliminate blocks in order to move forward more easily. An experienced coach will ask the right questions, listen to the things you say and the things you don't say to help you remove obstacles in your way.

4. De-Stress and Find Balance

As 21st century humans, we need to find a balance of mind, body, and spirit. A coach is there to help you find that in your life. You cannot be your best self if you are stressed, overwhelmed, and unhappy. With your coach, you will identify stressors in your life and work to eliminate as many as possible and reduce the effects of the rest so that you can take charge and create your best life.

5. Unconditional Support

You can count on your coach to support you. Your coach may not tell you what you want to hear, but he/she is not a critic or judge. So, when a curve ball threatens to knock you down, your coach is with you. On days when you just can't see the benefits of batting, your coach helps you identify the values of staying in the game. When you are confused about which directions to go, your coach gives you knowledgeable guidance. When you hit a home run, your coach is the first to give you a high-five. And when you win the game, your coach gives you all the credit!
